money authorized to be issued in 1789 by the revolutionary French government.
Assignats were non-interest bearing notes which originally were
secured by the confiscated properties of the church and were a typical
example of fiat money.
Successive issues were authorized and issued in such volume without
security that they depreciated rapidly and in the end became valueless.
